1. What is AdBlue and what is it used for?
AdBlue is an aqueous urea solution used in the automotive industry, consisting of water (67.5%) and urea (32.5%). It is injected into the exhaust system before the catalytic converter, where it is converted into ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia reacts with the nitrogen oxides in the catalytic converter to form harmless nitrogen and water vapour. In this way, AdBlue helps neutralise harmful nitrogen oxides, which are more dangerous than carbon dioxide (among other things, they are highly carcinogenic). The product is used in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems in diesel cars.

2. How much and how often do you fill up with AdBlue? Is it possible to pour too much AdBlue?
Most modern cars are fitted with systems that monitor the level of AdBlue. When the level is low, a warning will appear on the dashboard. Some vehicles may also display a message that AdBlue needs to be topped up for a certain number of kilometres before it is completely depleted.
Typically, the AdBlue tank has sufficient capacity for the fluid to last for several thousand kilometres. On average, 1 litre of AdBlue is sufficient to cover approximately 1,500-2,000 kilometres, depending on driving style. When the system sends out a warning, it is best to pour in around 10 litres of AdBlue, which is enough to cover a minimum of 10 kilometres and ensure that the maximum level in the tank is not exceeded. Is it possible to pour too much AdBlue? More dangerous than overfilling (which mainly involves the risk of spillage) is opening the tank and filling it while the engine is running. This can cause the system to become aerated and damage the pump. Always switch off the engine and ignition before opening the reservoir!
