1. Main advantage of FAP wet filters

FAP/DPF is a standard used in all cars with diesel engines manufactured after 2006 and meeting the Euro 4 emission standard. The PSA concern during the production of diesel engines (which can be found under the bonnet of not only Peugot and Citroen, but also some Ford, Volvo and Toyota models), uses only wet filters, the so-called FAP, which thanks to the application of a special fluid, allow to reduce the temperature necessary for burning out the soot from the filter by approximately 200 degrees Celsius. Apart from ecological considerations - this makes it easier to carry out the entire firing process, which is a particular problem for those with a dry DPF, using the vehicle mainly in the city.

2. FAP tank capacity

In theory, a full tank of Eolys fluid should be sufficient to cover about 100,000 kilometres, but in practice this varies. In cars manufactured before 2010, the electronics dispense about 4ml of FAP additive from the tank and this is based on the open fuel filler (the signal comes from the fuel filler opening sensor), but it is the same value every time. This means that in older generations, in most cases, each opening of the fuel filler led to an automatic dose of 4ml. On cars after 2010, the electronics in the FAP tank also dose approximately 4ml of fluid per full tank, but if less fuel than a full tank is added, the system doses the appropriate amount of FAP fluid relative to this value. In addition, depending on the car model, the FAP fluid tank has a different capacity, and, horror of horrors, the actual capacity of the tank may differ from that stated in the service specification (any verified discrepancy of this type is included in the table below). With all this in mind, the error message on our car's dashboard may surprise us much earlier. The content of the message, depending on the language set, may look as follows: „Particle filter additive level too low: repair needed” - photo 1.

However, as regards the error code that the OBD computer will indicate: "P1446 Additive adding Calculated addtive level below the critical threshold".

Have you displayed any of the messages discussed above or similar ones? Don't know how many litres of fluid your FAP tank holds and how to go about refilling it? We have prepared a table from which you can easily find out how many litres of FAP fluid should be added - just enter the number of your tank in the appropriate box (photo 2.). Below the table, you will find an instructional video showing how to top up the FAP fluid yourself in the correct way using our FRANTIS brand kits (kit includes fluid, filling tubes and dosing bottle).

However, please note that there are two types of tanks:

  1. Rigid reservoir (non-removable) - possible to fill with the proper additive.
  2. Pouch / bag (replaceable) - no filling possible, there is a pouch with FAP fluid inside which must be replaced.

5. What are the risks of driving without FAP fluid?

Ignoring error messages indicating low FAP fluid levels can lead to very unpleasant and costly consequences. On newer models, driving without the additive in addition to the active 'check engine' light (going into safe mode), can lead to the vehicle being completely immobilised (which protects the owner from negative consequences - but remember that electronics are not foolproof). The first mild symptoms that may appear are increased fuel consumption, a decrease in power and an increase in harmful emissions through clogging of the particulate filter.

As for the two most serious faults are:

  1. Failure of the particulate filter - average cost of a replacement 230 EUR, the original is an expense of around 450 EUR.
  2. Failure of the FAP pump, which in the case of the majority of models requires replacement of the entire FAP tank - expense at the level of 230 – 450 EUR.

In the event of a FAP pump failure, thanks to our special offer, in selected models you may do without replacing the entire tank. Introducing our novelty - FAP fluid tank repair kits, from FRANTIS brand (including FAP / DPF fluid pump, 3 litres of EOLYS fluid, hose and filling cap):
