AdBlue – what is that?
Before you start replacing the AdBlue injector, you should know what AdBlue itself is. It is an aqueous urea solution with a nominal concentration of 32.5%. This liquid is stored in a special AdBlue tank. The AdBlue tank is usually located in the vicinity to the boot, under the floor of the vehicle or against the side wall, and its filler can be located next to the fuel filler, under the bonnet or in the boot. AdBlue fluid releases ammonia which, when exposed to high temperatures, helps to reduce environmentally harmful nitrogen oxides, thereby reducing the amount of pollutants entering the atmosphere. AdBlue itself is not classified as hazardous or dangerous to the environment. However, in order for the solution to work correctly and smoothly, the entire AdBlue system, including the injectors, must function perfectly.
AdBlue Additive Injector - principle of the operation
The AdBlue system consists of several parts, and each has a specific task. The AdBlue injectors are primarily used to transfer the urea solution to the catalytic converter, located in the exhaust system. There, under the influence of high temperatures, ammonia is given off to react with nitrogen oxides. In this way, a chemical process takes place in the catalytic converter, turning harmful compounds into water vapour and volatile nitrogen, which is completely harmless and safe for the environment and the surroundings. The proper functioning of the AdBlue injectors is very important, as they are responsible for initiating the entire exhaust gas cleaning process in the exhaust system.
AdBlue Additive Injector - symptoms of damage and failure
In case of problems with the AdBlue injectors, the car's computer will communicate the damage of the injectors. It will inform us of errors that have occurred in the AdBlue system – for example on the dashboard or in the infotainments system. When the vehicle's computer tells us that the AdBlue system is damaged or malfunctioning, it’s worth to take the car to a specialist or to get on with the repair yourself.
